What is Tango Libre?

Tango Libre is a welcoming weekly gathering for Argentine tango dancers of all levels and for those who are simply curious to try.

It is a space for movement, connection, and community, guided by joy rather than rules. Whether you are brand new or a lifelong dancer, you will find room to learn, play, and explore.

But this night is about more than dancing. Every penny you pay goes to support Personality Disorders UK, the national mental health charity supporting carers and families of people living with Borderline Personality Disorder.

So when you dance here, you are also helping someone survive.

Weekly Format

Each Tuesday evening combines learning, dancing, mentoring, and social connection in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

18:45–19:45 — Absolute Beginners

Led by Dr Constantina Katsari, this class offers a safe and supportive introduction to tango. Dancers learn the core of tango: walking, connection, musicality, and women’s technique.

18:45–19:45 — Improvers

With Steve Donkin, an experienced teacher of Classical, Nuevo, and Alternative tango, dancers work on musical interpretation, technique, and improvisation tailored to their level.

Mentoring Culture

Experienced dancers are encouraged to gently support newcomers. This is a community effort to grow tango in the region from the ground up.

19:45–21:45 — Freestyle & Guided Practica

This is the time to dance freely, ask questions, explore new partners, and enjoy the music in whatever way moves you.

  • Alternative tango and smooth sounds
  • Motown, swing, jive, and jazz
  • Kizomba, salsa, bachata, and more surprises
  • Tea, coffee, and biscuits for connection off the dance floor too

“This is not just a dance night. It is part of a movement for mental health justice.”

About Personality Disorders UK

Personality Disorder UK is a UK-wide, peer-led charity supporting carers and loved ones of people living with Borderline or other Personality Disorder.

Your dance directly supports those who are often left to manage crisis situations alone — parents, partners, siblings, and friends who urgently need tools, understanding, and guidance.

Who Is This For?

Tango Libre is designed to be open, inclusive, and encouraging. You do not need a partner, special shoes, or previous tango experience. You just need curiosity and an open heart.

Never danced tango before?

You will be welcomed with open arms and guided gently from your very first steps.

Coming from another dance style?

You will enjoy the musicality, variety, and the freedom to explore different influences.

Tango veteran?

Come to dance, guide others, and help shape a growing local scene with generosity and flair.

Coming alone?

That is absolutely fine. Tango Libre is built to help people connect naturally and comfortably.
